The 83-year-old Woodmere resident’s legal guardian grew concerned after discovering severe bruising on the woman’s body in late February, Nassau County Police said.
When the guardian questioned the victim’s caretaker, 36-year-old Merlyn Fredericks, she said the victim had fallen on multiple occasions, police said.
The concerned legal guardian then placed a hidden camera inside the home, which captured Fredericks punching, grabbing, and yanking the elderly victim, according to police. The victim suffers from a cognitive disorder, detectives noted.
Fredericks, of Queens, was arrested on suspicion of assault, endangering the welfare of an incompetent or physically disabled person, and endangering a vulnerable elderly or incompetent person.
She was scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court on Friday, March 7.
Detectives asked anyone who may have been a victim of a similar crime to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS or call 911.
